I recently saw a webpage that was promoting Malaysia as a great location for retirement. The claims of low cost of living, low crime rate, exellent infrastructure, easy immigration rules, etc made it sound very attractive.
Anyone living there that can give some first hand insight?

Hi Angela,Stumbled upon your post while surfing. I'm a Malaysian, born and grew up here. I can tell you that this is truly a wonderful country, peaceful and warm. If you would like to know more, I can get your more information. In fact, my neighbour is an expat having the same name as yours and she is loving it.
By the way, where are you from and what intentions or plans do you have?
Best Regards
Rodney Looi

I have been in and out of Malaysia and I tell you that this claim that the country is a great retirement destination is true especially if you are fond of anything oriental. They have a a completely different culture from us(Westerns) which maybe odd at first but in the long run you would eventually love it. They have high respect to women and are really courteous and warm people, hospitable and welcoming. Malaysia is indeed one of those retirement haven countries.

why would you waste your time saying something as stupid as, "hi glad to join this blog"?

I am a local Malaysia and would like to add that while most comments about Malaysia are true - especially the warmth and friendliness of Malaysians - there are still some areas that may be a concern to some who intend to relocate here. Therefore, I suggest you must come and see the country and people yourself, first hand!To help you do that, I know an Australian friend who runs two fully-furnished private apartments as short term accomodation near to downtown Kuala Lumpur. Besides reasonable rates (most economical for 4 to 6 persons), he is most pleased to offer good tips and advice as he has been living in Malaysia for several years now. For other locations, I will assist where possible.
Another "a must" I think is to get yourself a book about moving and settling down in Malaysia, published by Expats Malaysia, which offers good advise about almost everything including how to go about getting a telephone line for example, useful contacts and potential pitfalls in renting/buying a house.
I will be pleased to help you on the above (to provide the contact of my friend and/or to buy and send you the book) or to give you advise on areas of your interest for example tips on getting around safely in Malaysia, especially for first timer to Malaysia.
Welcome to Malaysia!

Dustin, you are a nuisance..why on earth would you care about such a person...isn't anyone free to post anything just like you have done? Anyway, I am also wondering why he is glad but your question is quite uncalled for.Angela, home is normally the best place to be. In fact if you would ask me about how living in my country is, I would tell you it is the bets place to be. Have both sides of the story then make an informed choice.

Cost of living in Malaysia seems very reasonable. The country is trying to achieve a certain level of development, but, at the same time, is trying to attract expats and achieve a fair standard of living. Great! I will make plans to go to Malaysia asap.

True Richard, it is hoping that a huge expat population and one that is mainly interested in investment, will cause a turn around.James has indeed highlighted a few important things to note. It is best to have a first hand experience and chart the way forward based on what you know rather than rely on second hand information.
It might be inconveniencing for some people to visit the country for familiarization purposes. In the end, you will make an informed choice

I also have read lots of Malaysian forums and blogs that claims Malaysia as the best retiring destinations for expats. They have their low cost of living but i doubt the slow paced living, i would still go for Lima. However, there are lots of other good shots to try out Malaysian living. I heard that the people in there are warm and so accommodating. I would want to live with friendly people around me :)

Of course some are just some agents of tourism for Malaysia. Trying to talk us to trying the life in Malaysia. Well, that is what pep talk is, if you are convinced enough that it is a desirable place to retire then you are free to do so. Let me also suggest some interesting countries in Asia which are also a great and savvy place to retire: The Philippines, Vietnam, Japan...

Here is an introduction about the cost of living in MalaysiaWhen considering this destination as a place to live, the first thing most people will want to know is the cost of living in Malaysia. It's tough to sum it up on a single page as there are so many different lifestyles and expectations. Naturally, the cost of living will vary wildly between those who are single and those who have a family. We'll include some key costs here and you can make your own adjustments from that. This basic information will be critical to those who are negotiating a pay package from their employer.

Yeah, Malaysia is one of the best county in Asia where retirees and expats can relocate. The country have so much to offer other than what can be seen by the eye. I also love Malaysia. The people there are nice and will welcome you as if you are not a foreigner at all. You will feel the sense of being one of them. I really love this country. Smile.

Malaysia is everything good that you've heard. The people are warm, welcoming and friendly and the place itself is beautiful. Cost of living and Immigration is also easy. Retiring there is wonderful idea it would be quite relaxing and you would thoroughly enjoy the experience.

You migth want to know more about Malaysia so here is a site that might help, here is what it has to say:As long as you are comfortable in the heat, the lifestyle of expatriate retirees in Malaysia is an enviable one. With temperatures ranging from 32°C during the day to 22°C at night, Malaysia is a tropical paradise of friendly people, wonderful food, beautiful beaches, cool hill stations, historic towns, a dynamic capital and the world's oldest rainforests. The ticket to this lush retirement paradise is Malaysia’s MM2H scheme which allows retirees with sufficient, but modest, funds to take up residence.
