| MALAYSIA: Lions in our midst (Lion Dance & history) We would like to share with you a video about the Lion Dance in Malaysia which we have created. Video clips of the Lion Dance National Competition live performance in Melaka are included. Lion Dancing is a symbolic and very important tradition/culture for the Chinese which is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity to communities. Lion Dance greeting is a common sight at auspicious occasions. Lion Dance is a combination of various forms of cultural essence performing indoors/outdoors. It is martial arts, dance, acrobatics, drama, art and music performance by the synthesis of a project. Its history dates back some 2000 years and is related to Silk Road. The Persian ambassador gave China lions among other animals. As there were no lions in China, the Chinese admired them and eventually adopted them into their culture and appreciated them as a symbol of peace and bravery. Hence, the invention of Lion Dancing. (Some sources have a different version about its history). There is a hierarchy for Lion/Dragon Dance ie Green Lion-Dragon-Qilin-Northern & Southern Lions. The N&S Lions have further categorized from Heshan to Fushan amongst others. Each type has been developed into different character for example the Green Lion (Ching She in Chinese) was invented during the Manchuria reign. It has a ferocious face that represents the cruel Manchurian who ill treated the Chinese. The dance is aggressive whilst in a way it calls the Chinese to rise against the Manchu.
